Professor Sudha Sundar - Wider implementation of IOTA ADNEX in secondary care settings
As of July, the IOTA training programme is now live across the region — with over 200 clinicians and radiographers from gynaecology teams beginning training. This is a big step toward standardising ultrasound interpretation, supporting earlier diagnosis of ovarian cancer, and reducing delays to treatment.
What it means for patients:
- Earlier, more accurate differentiation of benign vs malignant ovarian masses
- More consistent ultrasound interpretation across all local services
- Quicker referral and treatment timelines for patients in need
The programme is being delivered in partnership with trust clinical leads and amazing leadership and direction from Professor Sundar and Dr Vivian Do at Birmingham Women’s Hospital.
A two-year research and evaluation initiative is also underway to explore the impact of IOTA on patient outcomes and service efficiency — with the goal of informing future pathway development and commissioning.
