Pan Alliances Breast Group - Systemic Anti-Cancer Services Best Practice & Innovation: Sharing and Learning

23rd February 2024

De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms 61-65 Great Queen Street, London, WC2B 5DA

Chair: Professor Carlo Palmieri, Consultant Medical Oncologist, The Clatterbridge NHS Foundation Trust

Cancer services, particularly breast cancer oncology, are under significant strain across the NHS. Ongoing workforce shortages, rising demand, and the wider availability of new and more complex cancer treatments have all contributed to a ‘capacity crisis’.
This is particularly relevant to the delivery of systemic anti-cancer therapies (SACT), where demand is increasing by 6-8% per year, and it is now recognised widely that urgent action is required to ensure that cancer patients are not put at risk of suboptimal outcomes due to delayed or ineffective care.
The Pan Alliances Breast Cancer Group came together in September 2022 and discussions soon focused on how to raise the profile of the mounting pressures and exhausted clinical teams working in breast oncology. The Pan Alliances group gained momentum, supported by Breast Cancer Now and with members representative of the majority of the 21 Cancer Alliances, the UKBCG and the Royal Colleges of Radiologists, this group has continued to meet regularly and co-produced a report that ultimately led to this event offering an opportunity to bring together colleagues to share new ways of working in breast cancer service delivery across the country.
All 21 Cancer Alliances were represented at this event.
We were hugely appreciative of the support at this meeting from the national leads.
  • Dr Nicky Thorp – Medical Director, Professional Practice for Clinical Oncology
  • David Fitzgerald - Programme Director, NHS Cancer Programme, NHSE
  • Professor Peter Johnson - National Clinical Director for Cancer
  • Dr Emma Kipps - NCRAS National Clinical Lead for SACT.
  • Dr Anne Rigg - NHS England Chair of the Chemotherapy Clinical Reference Group
  • And of course, Breast Cancer Now - Baroness Delyth Morgan, CEO & Holly Heath, Head of Policy.
We would however like to say a huge thank you to all the presenters who gave up their time to join the day and share their work.
