This year the awareness week is particularly important as some appointments have been rescheduled due to COVID-19.

Cervical screening services are available and we would encourage anyone who receives an invite to book their appointment and attend as usual. If your appointment was on hold due to COVID-19, please contact your GP practice to arrange a new date.

Measures are in place at GP surgeries to keep everyone safe with appropriate infection prevention and control measures in place.  If you have concerns about cervical screening at the current time, Jo's Trust(who coordinate the awareness week) have provided someanswers and information on their website

It's really important that people continue to be screened in order for any unusual results to be followed up in a timely manner.

Recent changes to the cervical smear test have meant that people are being tested for the presence of the HPV virus first, this enables cervical cancers to potentially be prevented or identified much earlier.

Cath Fenton, Head of Public Health at NHS England and NHS Improvement, said: "Cervical screening is a free test offered in your GP practice. It is one of the best ways to protect yourself from cervical cancer; this test could save your life."
